Yeah, so, you had a mentor then, Doc? What was he like, yeah?
I did not have just one. I had seven. Seven men who raised me to know the true name of almost everything. There was one, Zator, who was like a father to me. But the rest were distant, when they weren’t instructing me. It’s a long time past and they are still much the same.
“I know who you are, Doctor Occult. Now I remember.” Uphir growled, crossing his arms. “The business I have isn’t with you, human. I want John Constantine. Keep away from my plans.” He spat, frowning deeply at Occult. John rolled his eyes, releasing the smoke through his nose while he listened to the demon. “Koth… yeah. I don’t have any business with you, Doctor. Leave us alone.”
"You may not have any business with me, unfortunately, due to John involving me, I have business with you." He really wished he could just blow this demon away, wished it were that easy to rid them of one of these things, but sadly they were eternal, and even if he could, blowing away the main physician would probably throw this whole place into tumult, "So, no, I do not think I will be leaving you alone."
John raised both eyebrows, almost clapped hands to his friend. Ellie was just watching the trio, but she let a laugh escape from her throat. Uphir was really angry with that. He didn’t know that stranger was so smart and intelligent. John tapped on Occult’s shoulder, grinning. “So, mate, you really had a bloody ace.”
The demon grunted, pointing a finger at Occult. “Who are you, human? You must be very powerful for knowing some entities.” John decided to let his friend solve that, only smoking calmly as he looked at Ellie.
Occult’s malicious grin softened for a small moment as John tapped him on the shoulder, but it didn’t last long as the demon began to speak again, “You can call me Doctor Occult. And no, I wouldn’t say I’m particularly powerful, I cannot move mountains; but, I am well versed and experienced. If you would like to learn anymore than that you should ask Koth, he is a member of your kind and he can tell you everything you need to know about me.”
The demon looked at Occult with a frown, afraid that the other man wasn’t bluffing. Even John himself drew his attention to his friend, wondering if he was telling the truth. But he was; Doc Occult wasn’t a con man like John, so he wouldn’t lie unnecessarily.
“So, little man, what do you have for me then?” Uphir asked, half smiling at Occult. John would say something, but he waited for his friend to explain the situation first.
"What do I have for you?" Occult asked, rhetorically, his grin getting wider as he lifted a finger, "Firstly, I have your name, Which may not seem that scary until you get to the fact that one of the first things I ever learned was how to use a name properly."
Occult came a bit closer, emboldened by the thoughts going through his head, he lifted a second finger, “Secondly, while you may be a demon, you are but a physician, probably only slightly above a Rhymer. While that may scare most, I have dealt with many of your kind before.”
Now he was really smiling, with the satisfaction, though he knew this was a demon and he had to take the threat of a demon seriously, even a lowly one. He lifted his third finger, which would be his last, “Lastly, you may succeed in your little plan, you are a demon so I won’t totally discount you; but, even if you do so happen to defeat us, you should know that I do have long lasting connections with many of the worlds most powerful entities… And though many of them practice a strict policy of non-interference,” He paused momentarily, mostly for dramatic effect, but also a bit because he feared he was starting to sound like a character in a mafia film, “there are also those who do not.”
John approached the lake and saw the figure of Uphir in it, laughing at him. “John Constantine. The famous Magus, the Laughing Magician. What are you thinking about my ‘magic trick’?”
“Terrible, but you’re makin’ a mess. I ‘ave to admit that.” John crossed his arms, cocking an eyebrow. “Let us see… you’re goin’ to say that me bloody soul belongs to you, roit?”
“Not yet, but it will. Very soon.” The demon laughed. “You’ll give me your soul, and I won’t do anything to your friends and family.” John paralyzed. They could mess with him, but not with Gemma and Chas. The way that demon was making John suffer was inhuman and he didn’t think Chas and Gemma would stand that.
Occult stood close by, listening intently to the demon’s conversation with John. Though he hadn’t been there personally he had heard of many times that John had been able to trick demon’s into doing exactly what he wanted. But when he saw John suddenly freeze he knew something wasn’t quite right with him.
Occult stepped forward, a smug smile plastered across his face, he peered at the demon, cocking an eyebrow, “You think we would let something like that happen? You may think you know John pretty well, but you must not know anything about me.”
That’s true, most of ‘em have their heads on straight. My pops, for one. He trained me, and I turned out all right. Lil’ trigger happy, but eh, I’m a teacher.
One good mentor can be as useful as many, it all just depends on what life has given them to teach.
Mind telling that to my cousin? [ A small smirk in play, he eyed the other arching his brow before letting it fall. ] I don’t think I can get through a day without hearing; “At the rate you’re going at, you won’t make it to your eighteenth birthday!”
And, blah, blah, blah.
You’d really be surprised by how many of us don’t make it passed our teenaged years. I just happened to have luck on my side with the Seven coming along or else I would not have made it passed infancy.
John placed a hand on Ellie’s shoulder, frowning at her. “Don’t try to seduce him. He’s the only way I can defeat this demon, roit? I know you’re a succubus, but stop it for a moment.” She growled, nodding. Then, she approached her fire lake and closed her eyes, extending her hands. John looked at Occult, sighing. “Sorry about that, she’s sex demon after all.”
Ellie suddenly was talking to Uphir through the lake. Then, she turned her eyes to both with a smile. “He wants to talk to you.”
“Should I, Doc?” John asked, rubbing his chin lightly.
"Go ahead, John, I’m standing right here." Occult said confidently, again clasping the Symbol of Seven in his hand. He was prepared this time, he would be much quicker to attack if anything should happen to go wrong.
“Nice to meet you, sir.” Ellie winked at Occult with a finger on his lips. John rolled his eyes and cleaned his throat loudly. Then, Ellie looked back at John with a frown. “So, you both don’t want to walk here. It’s really dangerous. I think you should use my help, I mean my true form. Just tell me the name of the demon and I can take you both where you can find him.”
Occult moved back as John cleared his throat, wiping his mouth with the back of his hand. He tried to do it slyly in the hopes the the succubus would not notice and be insulted. “The demon’s name is Uphir.” He said in reply to her statement, hoping now that they were asking for demonic assistance to get this over with as quickly as possible.
